Mattie Miracle Walk & Family Festival

The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity (EIN: 27-1238358), founded by Peter and Victoria Brown, in the loving memory of Mattie, their seven year-old son who passed away in 2009 after a 14 month battle with multi-focal osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Mattie Miracle is dedicated to addressing the psychosocial needs of children and families living with childhood cancer as well as educating health care providers on the impact of such a diagnosis on children and their families. We live out our mission on both the National and local levels.

On the National Level

  • We present at conferences
  • We research psychosocial issues and concerns
  • We write and publish book chapters
  • We funded the publication of a supplemental edition of a top tier pediatric medical journal highlighting our National Psychosocial Standards of Care Project for Childhood Cancer, a project we have been funding since 2013 (Pediatric Blood & Cancer, December 23, 2015)

On the Local Level

  • We enhance childhood cancer awareness: through our Annual Walk, presentations at universities and schools, and other community service learning projects
  • We provide access to psychosocial support: through funding a child life specialist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (a professional who assists 3,500 children a year), providing a free snack cart to inpatient families caring for children, and a monthly pediatric nurse support group luncheon
  • We promote advocacy of childhood cancer issues and needs through our annual candy and toiletry drives, lobbying on Capitol Hill, and outreach to families with childhood cancer
